NIKE GOLF OFFERS WOMEN FIRST COMPLETE EQUIPMENT LINEUP

New Irons, Woods and Driver Available for women golfers

Building on the industry-leading success of its women’s apparel and the meteoric rise of its Sport Collection footwear and Verdana Collection footwear and bags for women, Nike Golf will introduce its first complete lineup of equipment designed for women at golf shops and golf specialty stores throughout Europe.

The women’s lineup includes Nike Golf’s Slingshot Irons, the new irons with the revolutionary Slingback design; T-40 Fairway Woods in 3, 5, 7 and 9; and a 295cc driver engineered specifically for women. The club line is brought together beautifully with the Glacier Blue colourway adorning each club head.

Completing the lineup, Nike Golf has added to its popular Verdana golf bag offering with the new Verdana Limited Cart Bag and accessory shoe tote bag.

“Every step of the way and in every category we have worked closely with women of varying playing abilities to create an initial line that will meet the playing needs of a broad audience of women,” said Nike Golf’s U.S. General Manager David Pillsbury.

“From aesthetics and performance to price points and depth of line, we’ve created a great platform from which to build future women’s equipment lines.”

Women’s Slingshot Irons (SRP: £599 / Available: November 2003) Nike Golf’s Director of Product Creation and lead club engineer Tom Stites set out ten years ago to create a set of irons that would appeal to a broad spectrum of player abilities due to their easy playability and precision accuracy. The result of his historic journey is Slingshot, quite possibly the easiest hitting irons golfers have ever seen.

The magic behind the Slingshot Irons is the proprietary Slingback technology – a metal bar arcing from heel to toe – that positions the centre of gravity (CG) low, rearward and in the heel of long irons to facilitate squaring the club head at impact and to create a higher ball flight for long, soft-landing shots.

Throughout the set, the flow weighting of the Slingback design shifts the CG incrementally higher, closer to the face, and towards the toe as it moves toward the short irons. This progression reduces the launch angle and increases the spin rate which helps prevent shots from ballooning while maintaining the ability to hold greens.

The easy of playability for women extends beyond the club head design and right up through the Slingshot Irons shaft. The Women’s Slingshot Constant Graphite Shaft is ultra lightweight (sub-60 grams). The design is specifically for women with a very soft tip to help launch the ball on a high trajectory.

The Women’s Slingshot set consists of a 5-iron through a Sand Wedge in the Women’s Slingshot Constant Weight Graphite Shaft. The Women’s Slingshot 4-iron (SRP: £89 /) and 50-degree Approach Wedge (SRP: £89 /) will be sold individually.

Women’s 295cc Driver (SRP: £179 / Available: November 2003) Nike Golf opted for a slightly larger driver head than the industry standard. This 295cc Driver is constructed of a 355 Stainless Steel and maintains a forgiving, low and deep centre of gravity position that helps keep off-centre hits closer to their intended target.

The loft is 12-degrees, keeping in line with Nike Golf’s edict that “loft is your friend” and promotes greater distance. Similar to the Women’s Slingshot Irons Graphite Shaft, the driver shaft is an ultra lightweight sub-60 grams.

Women’s T-40 Fairway Woods (SRP: £179 / Available: November 2003) In keeping with the theme of easy playability, the key element of the T-40 series is the 40-gram Tungsten plug sole insert. The 40-gram tungsten plug places two-thirds of the clubhead weight below the equator of the golf ball, which contributes to optimal lift and shot trajectory. Combined with a larger face and cambered sole, the result is a more forgiving club that provides greater distance and accuracy from a variety of lies.

The Women’s T-40 Fairway Woods will be available in a 3-wood (16-degree), 5-wood (19-degree), 7-wood (21-degree), and 9-wood (23-degree).

Best known for its golf shoe, outerwear and glove franchises, FootJoy also is the industry’s dominant player in golf. To that end, FootJoy is introducing ProDry Extreme, which company officials said is the first sock in the golf industry made with Dri-Lex, an exclusive moisture control technology that is featured in FootJoy golf shoes.

ProDry Extreme technology, the company said, is temperature regulating, and it absorbs and releases moisture at the same time. What this means, according to FootJoy, is that the sock layer closest to the foot remains dry, cool and comfortable.

Added features, FootJoy said, are that the socks resist odor and mildew, and perform even better when washed and dried with fabric softener. FootJoy said ProDry Extreme socks also feature heel-to-toe cushioning in the sole of the sock for added comfort in step.

Product offerings are available in a variety of styles and color for men and women to choose from. The men’s line features styles in crew, quarter, sport, roll-top and low-cut available in black, white, navy, driftwood and oatmeal. The women’s line features styles in quarter, sportlet, roll-top and low-cut styles available in black, white and driftwood.

ProDry Extreme product availability is Fall 2005. Suggested retail price is $10 per pair for crew styles and $9 per pair for quarter, sport/sportlet, roll-top, and low-cut.

Ask someone what they think of the new Bridgestone GC Mid iron set on looks alone, and you could receive any number of reactions. More than likely, it would depend what view of the clubhead a particular person happened to have. If they happen to be looking at the cavity of the GC Mid, you might receive some mixed reactions. While looks are subjective, performance is something we can all appreciate. While standing over the GC Mids, your attitude may begin to warm. I know mine did.

When I saw the GC Mids for the first time, I have to admit, I was in the, “Whoa, these look a little odd” camp. But, the only views I had seen were of the cavity of the GC Mid. Prominently featured in the cavity are black disks that Bridgestone refers to as Gravity Disks. Many game improvement style irons have some sort of weight in the cavity, so in this regard they are nothing new. However, Bridgestone has taken the idea a bit further by using two “Gravity Disks” at the heel and toe of the iron head.

This in turn increases the stability of the head, especially on mis-hits, according to Bridgestone. Furthermore, the disks are varied throughout the set. Long irons have the disks spaced further apart and lower in the head to raise the ball flight and promote more forgiveness on off-center contact. Lower irons have the disks spaced more closely together to increase directional workability, and they are also raised higher in the clubhead to promote a more boring trajectory with these shorter scoring clubs. They might not look very conventional, but let me tell you- they flat out work. Shaping shots was possible without worrying about absolute “perfect” contact every time. Essentially, these irons will allow you to be as creative as you want to be, while still offering a safety net of forgiveness.

Bridgestone has also engineered a hollow area in the middle of the GC Mids which they call the “Gravity Chamber.” This hollow area takes even more discretionary weight out of the center of the clubhead and allows it to be moved to the perimeter in the form of the gravity disks. My concern was that the GC Mids would feel hollow or lack “punch” at impact due to this hollowed area. This concern was quickly erased when I took them out on their maiden voyage. Impact felt very solid, yet quite soft. The 431 stainless used in these heads is softer than more common 17-4 steel sometimes used in irons. They are some of the softest, -if not the softest cast clubheads I have had the joy of experiencing.

The GC Mids exhibited plenty of forgiveness throughout the set. Working fades and draws came naturally, especially in the mid and short irons. The reduced offset of these clubheads is something that is unique to this category of irons. Despite the lack of offset, it did not seem to negatively affect the forgiveness in any way. Standing over the GC Mids, they evoke a feeling of confidence. Not only is the offset very minimal, but the topline of the heads is very thin as well, more closely resembling a “players” cavity in this regard. This is the view of the GC Mids that I immediately fell in love with, as has been the reaction of everyone who has seen or hit this set. These irons look like they can produce just about any type of shot, and more importantly, they can. The only shot I struggled to hit was a knockdown long iron, as the longer clubs do help to hit a higher trajectory shot. The sole widths are wide enough to prevent “fat” shots and feature a radiused leading edge, yet they are not overly wide or bulky in any way. They seem to be a good compromise that will fit the widest variety of conditions and swing characteristics. With the utilization of the Gravity Disks and Gravity Chamber, Bridgestone seems to have emphasized the forgiveness to levels not before seen in an iron of this size and tasteful shape. Long irons were easy to hit high, and short irons act like the scoring tools they are in this set.

As impressive as the engineering and materials are in the GC Mids, the shafts are where the rubber hits the road (had to work a tire reference in there somewhere, right?) Bridgestone has really upped the ante in this aspect. The Stock shafts are the Nippon NS Pro 1050GH. They are a type of flighted steel shaft made in Japan, and featured in many of the more expensive clubs in the Asian markets. If you were to go out and purchase those shafts, they would be about a $200 expense. Other options include the lighter Nippon NS Pro 950 steel, the lower-launching True Temper Dynamic Gold, as well as proprietary graphite shafts manufactured by Aldila. Considering the quality stock shafts, and the impressive performance of the heads, the GC Mids are one of the best values on the market.

They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. In the case of the Bridgestone GC Mids, beauty is in the eye of the golfer. From address, the GC Mids are some of the most pleasing game improvement clubs you will lay eyes on. The Gravity Disks and Gravity Chamber design, while somewhat unconventional in their looks, are completely functional and make an ascertainable difference in the performance of the clubheads. With an incredible soft feel at impact, high quality stock shafts, and an uncanny ability to be workable while offering forgiveness, the GC Mids should be on anyone’s list of demo clubs. Once you see this set in person, the look will likely grow on you. Bridgestone markets this set as being appropriate for mid to high handicap players, but I think they are selling them short with this description. This set could fit a low single digit very easily. See for yourself, and you will likely be impressed.

A few months ago I was fortunate enough to win a pair of Oakley sunglasses.

As a wearer of contact lenses I find glare, wind, dust, sand and pollen are major problems on a golf course.
The first thing I noticed when I wore these lenses, by contrast with regular sunglasses, was that even on a fairly dull day there was no loss of visibility in the shadows. For a golfer this is essential for reading putts on undulating greens (or for searching for golf balls under the trees).

The ultra lightweight frames gripped the sides of my head snugly, and the wrap-around style protected me well from airborne particles.

The model frame on my pair is called a “Half Jacket” – Oakley have a bewildering array of frame styles – check out their website http://www.oakley.com – and a huge range of lens colours. Mine were bronze, which Cameron Baranski, PR and Advertising Manager, Oakley South Pacific tells me is a great all-rounder. Interchangeable lenses are available to suit differing light conditions – but I wouldn’t bother.

The eyewear comes in a compact cloth pouch that doubles as a cleaner for the Plutonite lenses. This is the material Oakley use in all their lenses – it’s virtually unbreakable so it has great applications for “sport specific” eyewear such as Half Jacket.

UST’s Frequency Filtered putter shaft features high-modulus woven material that provides hoop strength and stiffness for better feel.

The new Frequency Filtered putter shaft from United Sports Technologies is the first technological leap in putter development for more than 70 years, company officials said. The new shaft is the result of a joint venture between UST and Balance Certified, an equipment technology company known for its Pro-Balance shaft weighting system.

The companies sought to design a system that significantly improved a player’s ability to feel exactly where ball impact occurs on the putter face. This feedback to the player can result in improved putting, because the player can learn to stroke more putts on the putter’s sweet spot.

UST’s new Frequency Filtered putter shaft features a steel tip section and a butt section of woven graphite called Interlinked Carbon. Using the same 0/90-degree graphite fiber weave used in UST’s IROD Hybrid shaft — which company officials say is the No. 1 Hybrid shaft on the PGA Tour — the high-modulus woven material in the shaft provides hoop strength and stiffness that significantly reduces torque for solid feel, control and confidence.

The shaft’s most unique and important characteristic is the actual Frequency Filter device strategically integrated between the steel and graphite sections, officials explained. The Frequency Filter is specifically designed to allow certain vibration frequencies to pass through to the player’s hands and block out other frequency ranges from proceeding up the shaft length.

By filtering out the “static noise” vibrations, the Frequency Filtered putter shaft permits only those vibrations that provide positive feedback so players can learn to hit more putts on the sweet spot, thus gaining putting distance and directional control.

The Frequency Filtered putter shafts feature a weight of 106 grams, length of 37.75 inches and a 0.580 and 0.600-inch butt diameter. While custom shaft tip configurations will be available to original equipment manufacturers, UST is offering some of the more common tip configurations for custom clubmakers. Seven-bend tip profiles include straight 0.370, straight 0.355 tapered, flare, single bend, double bend one-plane, double-bend two-plane and 0.395 over the hosel.

The new UST shafts are now available at golf shops and component distributors worldwide and carry an $85 suggested retail price.

That’s “Sumo2″ as in “Sumo squared,” because the Nike Sasquatch Sumo2 driver features a square clubhead.

The Sumo2 marks the first square driver head from any major golf equipment manufacturer. But what’s the point? Well, the point is moment of inertia – and lots of it.

What is moment of inertia? You can click the link right above to read our glossary entry, or check out our MOI FAQ for a more technical discussion. But what it boils down to is simple: the higher the MOI of a club, the more forgiving that club should be on mis-hits.

That means that if you hit the ball on the toe of a higher-MOI driver, for example, the driver will twist less at impact and the ball will wind up closer to the intended target than it would have with a similar strike off a lower-MOI club.

The Sumo drivers even take their name from MOI: SUper MOment of intertia, get it?

How does a square clubhead help with MOI? Nike’s Sasquatch drivers already featured the SQ PowerBow and SQ Max Back Center of Gravity technologies, and those are incorporated in the Sumo drivers, as well.

Both already addressed MOI, but are enhanced in the new design.

The Sumo2 has multi-material construction (beta-titanium face, titanium body, composite crown) that saves precious grams of weight, weight that can then be redistributed rearward to, among other things, up the MOI. This is standard practice in the industry now. But Nike is redistributing that saved weight into the square geometry of the Sumo2. Think of it as adding some extra padding around the curved rear of a “regular” clubhead, padding that squares off the geometry. Also, because the USGA regulates the depth of a driver head in relation to its width, the square geometry keeps the club legal.

The “regular” Sumo driver has a traditional appearance, although Nike says that it has the highest MOI of any all-titanium driver. The Sasquatch Sumo2 driver has an even higher MOI, which Nike says is the highest in golf.

The Sumo2 has a traditional appearance when viewed face-on, but has the non-traditional square look from other angles. (Click on the photo on this page to view the Sumo2 from two other angles.)

Both the Sumo and Sumo2 have the yellow soleplate of Sasquatch drivers. Both are 460cc in clubhead volume, both feature SasQuatch/Diamana shafts, and each is available in lofts of 8.5, 9.5, 10.5 and 13 degrees.

The MSRP on the Sumo is $359.99. The MSRP on the Sumo2 is $479.99. Both begin shipping in January, 2007, and will be available at retail in February, 2007.

For some time now, Footjoy golf shoes have been the market leader in terms of reputation and usage on the pro circuit. In the golf shoe world they are number one, the Rolls Royce of the fairway. Unfortunately I’ve never had the pleasure of sinking my feet into a pair – that is until now!

From the moment I slid on the leather shoes I knew they would be comfortable. They come with an extra wide fitting to suit the Australian market. They’re extremely lightweight and what a pleasure to wear!

There was no sign of a blister after the first round and I think this is testament not only to a good fitting (thanks International Brands) but also to a really good shoe.

.
The sole has “claw style” soft spikes and an array of rubber nipples and permanent spikes which make for a sure grip. My first round in them was on quite a damp morning – not only did the feet stay dry but also the tread kept my number 10’s firmly planted on the ground.

I tested a white and black saddle over the predominantly black pair. I knew that the white front would dirty quickly, and after three rounds they already look worn. However during summer the white front does repel the heat. It’s been hot so my choice was vindicated, however it is worth some thought when investing in a new pair.

Some may think the $190 price tag is pretty expensive, but I don’t. I think foot comfort in any sport is paramount and considering a decent pair should serve you for at least for a couple of years and roughly eighty rounds of golf (a Hacker estimate and guess only), the shoes set you back roughly $0.52 an hour or $2 and a bit a round. Now do you think comfort and style should be compromised?

These Footjoy AWD shoes are an absolute pleasure to wear, and come highly recommended by Hacker. We have trailed them extensively and really we can’t find a bad word to write about them. The result, another five star Hacker rating!

On October 1, 2006, Mitchell Golf Equipment Company, the clubbuilding industry’s largest supplier of club building equipment, announced their Mitchell Partners Program. The company predicts that this will become the largest network of clubbuilders in the country. Although well-intentioned, this appears to me to be just a thinly veiled attempt to extract money from clubbuilders.

According to the terms of the program, if a clubbuilder pays $500 to sign up, he/she will receive a couple of window decals, a wall plaque and an in-store banner. Oh, and don’t forget the 10% discount on Mitchell equipment (training classes excluded).

Oh the surface this might sound nice, but you already have to have made an investment in at least two Mitchell machines to bend irons and putters as well as a shaft frequency analysis machine.

If I were a clubbuilder, I can’t figure out why I’d want to do this. I can go to Golfsmith’s Golf Clubmakers of America (GCA), the Professional Clubbuilders’ Society (PCS) or even to Mitchell Golf School and get training in clubbuilding. I don’t think it takes a rocket scientist to figure out how to use a Mitchell piece of equipment. So what’s in it for the clubbuilder?

I’m guessing that Mitchell is hoping to persuade a few hundred independent shops to pony up $500 (that’s $100K with just 200 participants) to get a few signs, a couple of decals and permission to use the Mitchell logo. This isn’t going to help a clubbuilder struggling to attract business. A customer doesn’t care if their clubs are bent with a Mitchell shaft bender or in a simple vice. What they do care about the skill of the clubbuilder.

A better use of this $500 investment would be to help the independent shop with some new innovative ideas instead of just trying to get more of their money. Maybe Mitchell should consider offering some Marketing 101 or Customer Service 101 training. Perhaps a tutorial to help shops take advantage of new technology like the Internet, blogs or video podcasts. Even offering a class called “E-Mailing Golfers for Fun & Profit” would be more useful than a 10% equipment discount on stuff clubbuilders are already buying.

I fear that with the announcement of 2nd Swing’s liquidation, True Temper’s weak sales, Hireko’s acquisition of Dynacraft and the endless malaise in the golf equipment industry, this program isn’t going to bring anything new to the table.
