Haabaa Golf Dictionary and Glossary of Golfing Terms

Face - The area of the club head that touches the golf ball when hit.
Fairway - The playing area of the golf course that is well kept.
Fairway wood - Wood clubs other than a driver.
Fan - Where a golfer misses the ball entirely.
Fat shot - When a golfer strikes the ground behind the golf ball, which leads to a low or high shot with little distance.
Featherie - Early golf balls stuffed with feathers.
Fescue - The type of grass often used for the rough.
Field - The golfers in a competition.
Flagstick - The indicator to show the position of the hole.
Flange - The foot of the club which rests on the ground.
Flex - The degree of rigidity of a club?s shaft.
Flier - Where a golfer hits a ball, which travels farther than expected.
Flier lie - Where a golf ball has a good lie in the rough.
Flight - A golf ball is in flight whilst travelling through the air.
Flip shot - Where a golfer plays a short shot with height.
Flub - Where a golfer hits a bad shot, often because they hit the ground prior to hitting the ball.
Follow-through - The part of a golfer?s swing after the golf ball has been struck.
Fore - A forewarning shouted to golfers who might be at risk of being hit by golf ball.
Forecaddie - A person who is employed to mark a golfer's ball.
Form - A golfer's standard of play based on their previous performances.
Four ball - Where two golfers play together against another pair.
Foursome - Where four golfers play together.
Free drop - Where a ball is dropped without penalty.
Fried-egg - A ball that is half-buried in a sand bunker.
Fringe - The area of short grass surrounding the green, separating the green from the fairway. Also known as the "apron".
Frog hair - The area of short grass surrounding the green, separating the green from the fairway.
Front nine - The first nine holes of an 18 hole golf course.
