| Pairings - A group of two players. |
| Par - The standard number of strokes set on each hole on a golf course. |
| Partner - Golfers playing on the same side in a competition. |
| Peg - Another name for a tee. |
| Penalty stroke - Where a golfer has to add an extra stroke to their score if they have violated the rules. |
| Persimmon - A wood found in the United States used to make club heads. |

| Pick up - When a golfer picks up his/her ball before getting it in the hole. In stroke play this will mean that the golfer is disqualified and in match play this looses the golfer the hole. |
| Pin - The pole in the hole on the green with a flag attached to the top of it. |
| Pin placement (pin position) - The location of the hole on the green. |
| Pin-high - When the ball lands on the green level with the hole. |
| Pinsetter - The person who is selected to be responsible for pin placement. |
| Pitch - A short, high shot that lands with backspin. |
| Pitch and putt - A golf course that is designed specifically for approaching the green and putting. |
| Pitch and run - Similar to a pitch shot but it is where the golfer hits the ball with a lower numbered club. This is to reduce backspin and loft and allows the golf ball to roll after it lands. |
| Pitching wedge - This is an iron club intended for pitch shots. |
| Play off - To decide a winner by playing a further round or more holes in a competition that is tied. |
| Playing professional - A golfer who is a professional and who predominantly contends in competitions. |
| Playing through - This is where golfer's allow those playing behind to play pass through. |
| Plus handicap - The number of strokes added to a player's strokes at the end of a round. |
| Pop up - A high, short shot. |
| Pot bunker - A sand bunker that is small and deep. |
| Practice green - This is a putting green which is separate from the golf course that is dedicated to putting practice. |
| Preferred lie - Where a golfer can move his/her ball in a specific way without penalty. |
| Pro shop - A shop at a golf club that sells golf equipment. |
| Pro-Am - A type of tournament where amateur golfers are paired with professionals. |
| Professional - A professional golfer who is paid to teach or to play in competitions. |
| Provisional ball - When a golfer takes a second shot if it is thought that their previous ball is out of bounds or lost. |
| Public links - A golf course that is open to members of the public. |
| Pull - When a ball is hit and it goes to the left of the target. The opposite applies to left-handed golfers. |
| Punch - A controlled, low shot often taken out of the rough or to keep the ball below the wind. |
| Push - When a ball is hit and goes to the right of a target. The opposite applies to right-handed golfers. |
| Putt - To be played using a putter. It is a shot taken on the putting green. |
| Putt out - When a golfer completes play by holing their ball. |
| Putter - A club designed for use on a putting green. Putters typically have a straight face and short shaft. |
| Putting green - The area of short grass that surrounds the hole, which is specially prepared for putting. |
